Julian specialises in acting for insureds in professional indemnity disputes and providing coverage advice to local and overseas insurers on significant first party claims. He is an experienced litigator and has represented clients in local and superior courts in South Australia and New South Wales.

Julian is also known for providing Australian and overseas insurers with comprehensive written advice on policy coverage, liability, quantum and defence strategy in claims made against a range of professionals. These include engineers, architects, directors and officers of large corporations, lawyers, accountants, valuers and certifiers. He also has experience in providing complex policy coverage advice on quantum, liability and claim management strategy in significant class actions.

More broadly, Julian has helped clients respond to complex cyber incidents, including matters that involve highly sensitive breaches and cyberattacks. He has helped manage some of the most significant data breaches in Australia and overseas, and has advised on federal and state privacy law compliance and compulsory notifications.

Julian has also worked with an insurer, while on secondment, to help manage claims and provide in-house legal advice.

Financial Lines

  • Defending an accountancy firm that was compelled by a liquidator to attend public examinations in the Supreme Court of New South Wales to provide evidence regarding an alleged breach of fiduciary duties owed to a client.
  • Defending a firm of geotechnical engineers that was engaged to test the condition of the soil beneath the site of a popular Sydney restaurant, which was undergoing significant structural renovations.

Complex D&O Policy Coverage

  • Providing policy coverage and defence strategy advice to three insurers of the respondent, a major insurance company, throughout the proceedings of a consumer class action commenced in the Federal Court of Australia.
  • Acting in a securities class action commenced in the Supreme Court of New South Wales against a publicly listed financial institution and two of its directors.
  • Acting in a shareholder class action commenced in the Supreme Court of New South Wales against a formerly ASX-listed mining company after it breached its continuous disclosure obligations by failing to notify the market about project issues, which ultimately resulted in the company’s collapse.
